Molly has said that government corruption in Malta must be rooted out in honour of murdered journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia and her family and to stop the EU country operating ‘like a mafia state’.
Based on a Green initiative, the Conference of Presidents of the European Parliament yesterday agreed to send an urgent mission to Malta to look at the state of the rule of law following recent revelations around the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia.
Molly Scott Cato said:
“I pay tribute to the dignified way in which the family of murdered journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia have continued their campaign for justice. We should honour that by rooting out corruption and ensuring that the Maltese Prime Minister and the Maltese government adhere to the rule of law and to European values.
“There are questions to be answered over the independence of the Maltese judiciary and allegations of corruption which extend to the highest levels of government. We cannot allow an EU member state to operate like a mafia state. There must be justice for Daphne Caruana Galizia and her family.”
