The Commission president nominee, Ursula von der Leyen, will speak in public today for the first time at a press conference in Brussels about her plans and ideas for the Commission presidency. She will then meet with Green MEPs to answer their questions in a live streamed session from 3.30pm (UK time).
Molly, who heads up the seven-strong UK Green MEP delegation and will also have a private meeting with Von der Leyen on Thursday, said:
“The awarding of Top Jobs in the EU has been a backroom stitch-up. We are not happy with the appointments, especially as they do not include any Greens. We had hoped, given the growth in the Green vote and the dramatic increase in our MEPs from 50 to 74, to be offered at the very least the Climate Action and Energy portfolio. But we, and the millions of EU citizens who want firm action to address the climate emergency, have been let down.
“However, as the fourth largest group in the parliament, von der Leyer is keen to court Green support when the European parliament votes on the new Commission President next week. As a group committed to openness and transparency, we are live streaming our question and answer session today so everyone can see how she responds to our demands on climate, a Green New Deal, tackling tax avoidance and challenging corporate power.”
