Molly has condemned Donald Trump after he announced that he plans to withdraw from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty Molly, who spoke at the weekend as keynote speaker at the annual conference of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) in Bristol, said:
“When Trump was elected many of us were fearful about the thought of having such a reckless sociopath with his hand on the nuclear button. With John Bolton egging him on as National Security Advisor, Trump has now begun to dismantle the system of arms control treaties that ended the Cold War.
“Having previously insulted his NATO allies, this is a sign of escalating tensions in global relations. We call on the British Defence Secretary, Gavin Williamson, to reinforce his support for nuclear disarmament, and on our European friends and neighbours to join with us in reinforcing the United Nations framework for multinational cooperation. This is the only basis for lasting peace and security.”
Kate Hudson, CND general secretary, added:
“This is a reckless move by Trump. Tearing up the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty will mark the end of the restraints on nuclear arsenals achieved in the 1980s. The danger is that we will see spiralling arsenals on a Cold War scale. We stand resolutely against this return to nuclear escalation and we call on all peoples once again to reject these moves.”
