Responding to the announcement in Brussels by Brexit secretary, David Davis, and EU Chief negotiator, Michel Barnier, that the UK and EU have agreed a transition deal, Molly Scott Cato MEP, Green Party speaker on Brexit, said:
“This is the transition of broken promises. We are to continue paying into the EU during the transition period; continue to accept all EU single market rules including free movement and the European Court of Justice will have the right to punish the UK if it breaks any of the rules during the transition period. While Greens have no objection to these conditions, this isn’t the Brexit that Leave supporters were promised.
“Of course, for the 48% of us who voted remain, the transition represents pretty much business as usual. The difference is we will have no say in shaping the rules of the EU but will have to adhere to them anyway.
“Is anyone satisfied by today’s agreement? What is emerging is a Brexit that will leave no one happy. Is all this pain for no gain really worth it? Let’s find out. Let’s have a people’s poll on the final deal, so everyone, and most specifically a young generation who weren’t able to vote in the EU referendum, can have a say on whether they want to accept the deal the government has negotiated or remain as fully-fledged members of the EU.”
