Responding to Michael Gove’s plans to ban plastic straws, but claiming that EU law could block him from doing so before Brexit, Green MEP, Molly Scott Cato, said:
“Michael Gove is clutching at straws again in his attempt to paint himself as the environmental warrior. This is another typical example of picking off the low hanging fruit when it comes to tackling environmental problems.
“As to the suggestion that such a ban will be easier post-Brexit, it sucks. This is just another attempt by a leading Brexiteer to smear the EU. Frans Timmermans, the vice-president of the European Commission, has today made clear his intention to ensure the EU introduces legislation on single-use plastics before the summer, and has challenged the UK to support this.
“It seems despite Gove’s ongoing green rhetoric, the Tory government may need some convincing to back EU legislation. They recently refused to back an EU target to recycle 65% of urban waste by 2035, despite this being supported by MEPs in the European Parliament and by the Council.”
