Wave power funding shows what Europe and renewables can do for Cornwall, says MEP

Molly Scott Cato has welcomed news that The European Commission is to fund a wave power project in Cornwall. The European Commission’s research and innovation programme, Horizon 2020, has granted €17m in funding for the Clean Energy From Ocean Waves (CEFOW) research project. The five year project will research and develop a wave energy converter at Wave Hub, the wave power-focussed test centre, in Cornwall. Dr Scott Cato said:

“This is a great example of how the EU can help unlock the huge potential of the region. The South West has innovation, skills and renewable energy resources in abundance. I have been fortunate enough to visit the Wave Hub project and was hugely impressed then by their leading-edge work. The funding from the Commission is a major achievement for this pioneering test centre and will help the region make great strides forward in developing wave power technology.”

A recent report from Molly Scott Cato identified that the South West is capable of producing more than 100% of its energy needs from renewables alone, without the need for nuclear or fossil fuels. The study reveals that Cornwall is the part of the South West with the greatest potential of all for renewable energy. Given political backing and the right investment, the findings reveal that Cornwall could generate up to 161% of its energy needs – making it a net energy exporter – and create 16,537 full time equivalent skilled jobs [3]. The report says that around 13% of this energy could come from wave power. Molly Scott Cato said:

“Our study shows that wave power will play an important part of the renewable energy mix for Cornwall. The South West has some of the world’s best renewable energy resources, in great abundance and great variety, capable of boosting our rural economies and ensuring our energy security. All that is holding us back is a failure of political will. So it is hugely encouraging when European funds are invested into the region to help propel us towards a renewable energy revolution.”
