England’s three Green MEPs, Jean Lambert, Molly Scott Cato and Keith Taylor, have written a letter highlighting the extreme suffering of EU animals exported to third countries in the Middle East, North Africa and Turkey. The letter expresses deep concern at the fact that in just the first eight months of 2014 1.7 million live sheep and cattle were exported to these regions. Animal welfare organisations say that many of these animals suffer greatly when slaughtered. The MEPs have called for a ban on live exports to third countries, to be replaced by a trade in meat.
